AVG 8 update / uninstall problems

Using AVG 8 Free with XP Home. It won't update - error message "General
error, not enough free memory, write error".
Following advice found online, I retried the update with Comodo Firewall
disabled and with 'DNS update' unchecked in AVG.
Nothing.
Following advice on the AVG board, I decided to do a fresh download and
install. The program refuses to uninstall. Error message:

"Local machine: installation failed.
Installation:
Error: Action failed for file avgemc.exe creating backup
Error: 0x8007000Z %DESTINATION% - "C:\Program Files \ AVG \ AVG8 \
avgemc.exe.install_backup_l",
%SOURCE% - "C:\Program Files \ AVG \ AVG8 \ avgemc.exe"

So how can I get the corrupt version off the machine? Or should I re-install
AVG without uninstalling the old version?
(I'm having this problem on a laptop - a desktop installed the update no
problem and AVG 8 continues to function as required on it)

Hello John :)

Out of interest, why haven't you asked this question on User2User?

I notice that it is a *much* quieter place without me!

If nothing else helps you, try scanning your machine with Malwarebytes'
Anti-Malware. It can detect and remove malware that even the most well
known anti-virus and anti-malware applications fail to detect. Detail
here:- http://www.malwarebytes.org/mbam.php

You do *not* need to make any kind of payment

HTH - Enjoy your day!

I just did an uninstall. My problem was AVG 8 seemed to be a drag on
file operations, was ok in earlier versions. I had no problem, took out
ZoneAlarm at same time and installed Avira, which is very good and
doesn't seem to slow things down as much.
I ran ccleaner and that got rid of some extra stuff. I think the winxp
firewall is sufficient and doesn't nag.

I was a great AVG fan until V8. I then found it suffered from the
overweightiness that many other AV programs suffer.
I find that Avira is better and lighter all round, and will stick with
that now -- until it too goes the way of Norton bloatware!
I preferred Avira, but it doesn't work well with ZoneAlarm, there's a
feedback loop that makes it appear there is continuous internet activity.
As I mentioned earlier, now I am just using the winxp firewall and Avira
is working well.
