AVGFree8 won't install; says long-gone AVG Anti-spyware still present ... (?)

I've tried installing AVG8 several times now. During first few times
when it went through check and told me conflicting AVG Anti-Spyware
app still present, I went and uninstalled it. Later steps: ran
registry cleaner, searched for all "AVG" in files and folders and
manually deleted everything I found, lastly even deleted the AVG
Anti-Spyware folder in my "programs" partition, where I keep all
backup files. Nothing. I deleted and dl AVGFree8 again and still the
same thing. Numerous reboots in between. Yet after system check, it
still keeps telling me that AVG Anti-Spyware is present and that I can
either go back or exit. No solution, in other words.

Has anyone else had this problem? How did you get around it? Thx

Turns out it was an obscure "ewido" entry in the registry that I had
to hunt for and delete manually! Talk about stupid! How many newbies
are going to run into that problem, I'd like to know ... ?

This is a new XP installation only a couple of weeks old and it was a
complete C drive wipe and reinstall. Ewido was on my system a year
ago, not anytime recently. I'm guessing that AVG Anti-Spyware left
that behind as a legacy type of thing that didn't get cleaned up
during this morning's uninstall.

So if anyone has this problem, I went the run > regedit route and then
searched for ewido and deleted the key. Presto, AVG8 would run.

I also had the same problem. I knew I had uninstalled it, so I went ahead,
and installed ver8, figuring it was a glitch of some kind. It installed
with no adverse effects.

Well, you were lucky. I couldn't just 'go ahead', when it reached a
certain point while it was verifying, it stopped and gave me error
message. It wasn't until I found and deleted the "ewido" entry that I
could even install.

Different situation, I guess. I'm guessing yours was a different
problem altogether.
