AVG Anti-virus won't update

I'm running AVG Free Edition Anti-virus v.7.5 on XP Home SP2

AVG Anti-virus refuses to update. Normally when I boot up, it says an
update has been downloaded, and I need to restart the computer to
complete the update process. In the past, this has worked fine, but
recently (for about the last week), it hasn't. However many times I
restart, I still get the same message - 'Urgent' - 'virus database out
of date' - 'please restart'.

The only new software I loaded during the last week was a Flash player
update to v. 9

Any ideas what might be the problem?

TIA

Not really, but uninstalling AVG and reinstalling it is pretty darn quick
and usually works.
PS: Download the newest version first before you uninstall the old one. That
way you do not have to access the Internet without AV protection, if you are
worried about it.

Thanks, I re-installed as suggested. Actually there is a 'repair
installation' option on the download dialog box, which I selected -
that seems to have done the trick.
