AVG virus protection

I have Windows xp and have been using avg successfully for over a year. As
of yesterday, something happened that now I can't open many websites unless
I turn the virus protection off. When it is off everything works fine, when
I turn it back on, websites don't open that use to open fine. The Comcast
internet provider said that when virus protections update, sometimes they
update something that stops things from working or has the security set too
high.
Does anyone know AVG and how to change these settings or what I can do?

Uninstall and then re-install AVG..

I tried to go to their online help, but nothing happened. I have the free
version and checked all around their website and couldn't get help. If you
know how, please let me know.

I thought I knew the site for the free version download, but as I went
through it, I had to pay. I did uninstall the version though. Could you
direct me to where I can download the free version of it? Thanks.
