Put this line in your HOSTS file:

193.86.103.19 guru.grisoft.com

This disallows the connection to the default download server and forces AVG
to find another one that is not being slammed. I know they say this option
is not available in the free version, but it is and works very well.

If you don't know what a HOSTS file is, the do some Googling. The HOSTS
file is the security conscious user's best friend.

This is usual for AVG, and has been for several years. Have patience or use
another AV.
