AVG Antivirus

Hi.

I use Windows ME and I can't update AVG Antivirus beyond 574.
When I run the update, I get the message, "Windows Could Not Upgrade
the File %1 from %2 %1: %2".

I looked at the Microsoft web site, and know this has something to do
with wininit.ini. There is no wininit.ini on my computer.

Has anyone else had trouble updating AVG?

Been there, done that, etc.

Only solution that I know of that actually works is this:

Go download the latest version of the program itself. Remove the existing
one and install the new one then go get the latest updates. After that, it
should work fine.

I'm unable to update AVG at all. I've reinstalled the latest version
of the program once like nocando but the virus database is now out of
date. I can't be bothered to register for a third time.

Try solution 1,

Click Start, point to Search, and then click Files or Folders.
In the Named box, type wininit.ini.
In the Look in box, click Local Hard Drives.
Click Search Now.
Right-click the Wininit.ini file in the list of found items, and then
click Rename.
Type Wininit.old, and then press ENTER.
Close the Search Results window.
Restart your computer.
Reinstall your program or update.

Or, try solution 2,

boot with a startup disk
and at a: type c: press enter
then type cd\windows press enter
then at c:\windows ren wininit.ini wininit.old
press enter-take out floppy reboot

Or, try solution 3,

Boot from your start up disk and choose minimal boot
Then at the A: type scanreg /restore
Then select the registry date you want to go back to.

Or, try solution 4,

This would be system restore using this option within windows or dos
mode

I am the original poster in this thread. I finally got updated, and
this is how I did it.

1. Manually download the newest AVG update file (save it to the
AVG\UPDATE folder).
2. Restart AVG to begin update.
3. When it asks if you want to restart the computer, choose NO.
4. Totally exit AVG.
5. Delete wininit.ini. (This is a text file, so if you want to look
at it you can using notepad.)
6. Copy the files in the new folder to the main AVG folder. The new
folder has the version number as part of it's name (something like
$AVGUPDATE590$).
7. Restart AVG and it will be updated.
8. Delete the numbered folder.

The wininit.ini file has the names of the files to copy from the
numbered folder to the main AVG folder. I just did the copy manually.
