Good free AntiVirus software ??

I am looking for a good free Anti-Virus program, where i can get updates
regularly.
I have already tried Vexira Antivirus (but that stopped working properly)
and also AVG Antivirus, but AVG just seems to tell me of a virus then tells
me to run AVG for Windows. i.e. no option to just delete the virus when it
finds it !

Thanks
Andy

I like this one: http://www.avast.com/ (or http://tinyurl.com/2r4sq ). It
lets you get rid of them.

I have been using AntiVir Personal Edition for more than a year with
complete satisfaction. It is very small and light on resources, and it
has frequent updates.

I have been using AntiVir Personal Edition for more than a year with

I haven't tried Avast yet. I see that it is popular. I use AntiVir as
listed above.

Sometimes I don't update over a couple of days and find I have 3-4
definition files and an engine improvement to download. They are
working around the clock to stay on top of threats and to move towards
engine perfection.

Does anybody know how to write a bat file for using F-Prot for DOS?

I want to check two folders regularly, like the Windows folder and my
download folder, and it would help a lot if I could just run a bat file
to check those two folders.
I am using Win98SE.

I am using Win98SE.

Use Notepad to create this text:

@echo off
cls
f-prot c:\windows /ai /beep /nosub /packed /type /report=f-prot.rpt
f-prot c:\download /ai /beep /nosub /packed /type /append

Name this fpchk.bat and make sure it's in your f-prot folder. Using
Windows Explorer, locate the icon of fpchk.bat and drag it out to the
desktop. Right click and select to create a shortcut. Right click and
select to move it where you want it.

To get an explanation of the switches just type f-prot /?
You can modify them according to your wishes. Actually, the /type
switch is on now by default in the latest version, so including it as
I have is redundant. Notice that each time the batch is run, a new
f-prot.rpt file is created and appended when doing the download
folder. You can read this text report file in Notepad.

I believe, however, that F-Prot does not work under Win XP.

Great. Thanks.

No Problem!
Works fine in DOS-Windows ...

Sorry Richard, but F-Prot for DOS is not specified for use on NT based
OS even when FAT32 is chosen. You'll probably find that at least some
folders and files never get scanned. However, it may be that you can
use it for just scanning a download folder or something like that.

I downloaded the latest versions of fprot and virus definition files and
the bat file works fine.

Unfortunately fprot for DOS still suffers from a problem with the
Causeway DOS extender. I had hoped they would have fixed it by now.

I have had problems with that for the last 6 months using several
different downloads of fprot for dos.

I have managed to use it anyway in the past, by giving it just a few
files at a time, but it makes it very troublesome to use.

Now it stops after a few files with
......
Exception 0E Error code 004

(Register dumps)

Writing CW.ERR file

Causeway error 09: Unrecoverable exception. Program terminated.
........

Have you heard about this error?
Is there something I can do about it?

I have a celeron 2.4GHz, Asus MB, 512MB memory, win98se.
I also have terminated all programs and processes except the most basic
ones while running fprot, it doesn't help.

It is too bad, because I really like fprot for dos and prefer it over
all other virus checkers.

Together with your bat files it is a very good solution, so this
Causeway extender problem is really irritating.

Not that I know of other than do what some have done and use a earlier
version. I doubt that's a good idea, however.

Also, are there *any* of these free a/v that *are* valid for commercial
use?? I work for a small startup that doesn't supply us with a/v software,
and I'd really like to be running _something_ ...

I'm still using AVG.

Is Avast easier to use?, any tips appreciated .

AVast has automatic updates where as AVG doesn't (as far as can remember)
only manual updates. Has many other features AVG doesn't
