I've been using AVG Free Edition for years - it hasn't let any 'nasties' through yet. It also comes with free updates, which is very helpful.

I'd suggest that you set the schedule for updates to something other than
their default with is either 7 or 14 days, I believe.

On one Yahoo site that I subscribe to, it was stated that AVG brought out a

said the auto updates for the free version ceased, and the user had to go to
the download site of AVG to manually update.
So you may not have the protection you think you have had, for the last few
months at least.
I recommend to AVG users that they visit the site, and check that they are
fully updated.

I have AVG free. I started using it about 6 months ago and have only good
things to say about it. It has blocked a couple of viruses, it has never
given false positives, and I have it configured to auto update every single
day, which it does. One thing I don't like about the free version is that
you cannot manually scan individual drives, but can only choose to manually
scan your whole computer which takes forever for me. You can manually scan
external drives, however. I also have mine set to auto scan my system every
night. It does not scan the documents and settings portion of XP, which is
where word processing documents and such are saved.
Recently I purchased and installed Norton Internet Security 2004 because I
wanted something that would protect me against spyware, and block some
pop-ups without my having to remember to do or run anything. It's easy and
pretty mindless, but sometimes one less thing to do makes a big difference
in my world.
However, not sure if it is coincidence or not, but since I
installed the NIS 2004 my computer has been PAINFULLY slow. If after I find
it to be caused by NIS, then back to AVG I go!

I will try right click. I thought mine was scanning D&S until I checked the
scan results. It lists everything that is scanned, but shows access is
denied to D&S. I checked and every time if ever performed the scan it did
not scan D&S for any of the users. Any advice?
