AVG 7.5.488 reports that it is turned off

I just installed AVG Free and after rebooting am now being told by
Windows Security Center that "AVG 7.5.488 reports that it is turned
off". If AVG is off, how does one turn it back on? If it's on, how
does one make Windows Security Center stop giving me erronious
information?

I tried posting this on the AVG support forums but can't seem to
register for them...

Make sure you have all the AVG updates.
After you are sure all updates are installed, reboot.

What does AVG say?
The icon in Notification area by the clock should tell you.
Right click the icon for options.

If you still have the problem, uninstall AVG, reboot, install AVG and
install updates.

AVG says "You are fully protected. Your system is up to date and all
installed components are working properly".

Hovering over the AVG icon says "AVG Free Edition - Control Center"
and hovering over the Security Alerts icon says "Windows Security
Alerts".

In AVG, when I highlighjt "Shell Extension", it says "AVG Free Edition
is active in Windows Explorer."

When I highlight "Resident Shield" it says "Resident Shield is loaded
and all important functions are activated. Heuristic Analysis is
active. Scan floppy disks is active. On-close scan is not active."

Looks to me like it's on despite Windows.

I'll try rebooting, later, but if that doesn't help, surely I'm not
going to have to just uninstall / install AVG every time I turn my
computer on!?

If the computer was running an anti-virus program prior to installation
of AVG Free, what was that program? Some anti-virus programs are aversive
to having another one installed and running concurrently.

No you don't have to uninstall and reinstall AVG every time. Try opening the
Windows Security Center (in Control Panel), then disable the Antivirus
monitoring and close Security Center. That will disable the notification
about AVG. The next time you reboot, open Security Center again and
re-enable antivirus monitoring. If Security Center is capable of interfacing
with AVG (it isn't compatible with all firewalls and antivirus programs) it
should report AVG status correctly.

There is no reason to uninstall/install each time you power on the
computer.
But this time you want to if nothing else resolves the issue.

Many issues are resolved simply by rebooting so you do not want to do
to much until, you have had a chance to reboot.

Someone else mentioned another anti virus?
Was another installed?
Which?
And was it completely and successfully removed?

When did this issue start?

What anti-virus application was installed prior to installing AVG (Free, I
assume), if any? Did you uninstall it? If it was NAV or VirusScan, did you
also run the removal tool?

Had the same problem after a recent "update Tuesday" with AVG. A repair
install of AVG fixed it.

Rebooting it did indeed fix it - thanks :)

Microsoft had to pick a day and they chose the 2nd Tuesday of each
month.
Only they know the precise reasons, perhaps based on other internal
schedules.

However occasionally exceptions are made and updates are issued out of
cycle.

If their website traffic is anything like mine, (smaller scale, of
course) Tuesday is my lightest day for hits, so that might be a factor.

Are you dumping registry entries? Explorer will leave a registry
entry that "Spybot" will remove if you aren't careful and when it
does, there will be a report you don't have any anti-virus running.
