AV-software for Pre-RC1 (5536) - AVG!

K

Kai-Uwe v. d. Ohe

After installing 5536 it would refuse the installation of:

- Kaspersky (v6)

- BitDefender (v8)

- AntiVir (v7)

- Avast (v?, but pretty recent)

The only program that would install without warning about
compatibility issues was AVG from:

http://www.grisoft.com/

It installed, updated itself and apparently runs fine. I just
wanted to share this finding with those still hunting for an
AV-software for 5536.

To my surprise even Avast wouldn't run properly. Though
I ws able tp install it, on the next boot Vista came up with
the message that a driver was disabled - which turned out
to be related to Avast, thus preventing it from starting. While
Avast was the AV-software of choice for Beta 2 this appa-
rently is not true for 5536.

You are right: avast! 4.7 doesn't run on Vista Pre-RC1 (b. 5536).
This fact is reported by Vista during installation (while checking the
system); no update possible.

THX for the hint towards AVG - will try it.

That makes sense. I did a clean install anyway (though it
was initiated under XP) to another partition.

I saw several postings regarding problems with AV-
software and was quite happy to find something
that seems to work.

Have you had any subsequent problems with AVG? I installed it after seeing
your suggestion and it seemed to install ok, but now when the computer boots
I get a warning message--"can't initialize AVG antivirus interface". The
icon does not appear in the tray, but if I manually start the interface, AVG
states everything is working and usually after closing, the icon is then
shown in the tray. Do you have this problem? Thanks

No. I installed AVG Free Edition 7.1.405 (8/17/2006) on b. 5536 and
got no warning message.

No problems so far, still runs fine. Maybe it conflicts with
some other software you may have installed? So far, at
this early stage where I mainly want to test for hardware
compatibility (trying to hibernate gives me a BSOD, btw),
I have installed just fery few apps that apparently don't
interfere with AVG. After having nothing but trouble with
other AV-software, it seemed that AVG is "it" since it
ran/runs perfectly, AFAICT.

I forgot to mention that another person said he was
happy with Trend Micro PC-cillin Beta. Have you
already tried that?
