Best AV for Vista #5384

After my documented issues with running AVG Pro on Vista when it was
installed on my XP disc also. AVG works provided I keep UAC disabled (most do
anyway)
I am considering a new AV to make sure everything is working - tried Avast
but it slowed boot times - reported in performance in control panel.

Trend have a beta for Vista but it seems to be the whole security package
not just an AV. I normally run NOD on my actual computer but would appreciate
advice if there is an AV which is as compatible as any could be with the
current beta.
I will definitely install a totally different one when RC1 is released to
make sure i don't have this issue with AVG needing access to C when booting.

I use NOD32 on all my machines. IMO, it is the best. Amazingly, it maintains such a
high accuracy in such a small package and is easy on system resources. Some have
reported that you can get NOD32 to work on Vista, I haven't tried. I will wait until the
guys at Eset have a Vista version.

I am using Trend's beta on Vista. Seems to work well. You can during installation
choose only the AV component. That is what I did. I didn't want all that extra stuff.

Thank You Michael like you I would prefer NOD but this is not an option at
the moment. Really appreciate the extra advice for choice on install with
Trend, I don't want any of the extras either.

Actually I haven't been in the NOD section for a little but will be watching
as Vista release date gets closer.

I downloaded Trend quite a large download presume it is because it is the
whole suite. Decided to leave the install until my mind was clearer as I was
working out other applications and lost time.

Yes, it is the whole suite. Just watch for the prompts, you'll get to
select what you want to install or not.

Wow...I get more impressed with people every day. On our radio show
(TechTAK) we've pushed NOD32 since we started, and have probably gotten them
quite a bit of business due to about 50% of our caller's problems are caused
by either Norton or Incredimail.

The best part about NOD32 is that you don't know it's there unless it finds
something or there is a problem. It doesn't use much for resources at all
and it doesn't take over your computer.

I have tried to install and run it and have had various problems doing that
on Vista x64. (It's a different problem every time...) Usually it won't
even install. A couple times I have installed it and thought it was working
and ended up with a "windows must close NOD32..." for whatever reason.
There are people who claim that it works on the older releases, but I need
something for this one so, yes, I am running the TrendMicro.

I emailed ESET and asked them. They said that, officially, they can't give
support for NOD32 v2, but that v3 in it's later form should work on Vista.
At this point, they said that the system is just too different from XP to
reliably work, so even if you do get it installed and running, it probably
is not actually working.

I have used Avast since the Vista Beta has been available, afaik it is
the only AV that officially supports it.

I used NOD32 up to 5472. Simply run NOD32KUI as Admin and it will load. On
5472 that stopped working however. For 5472 I downloaded the Trend beta, and
it seems to work as well as NOD32. In fact, there are some aspects of it
that are nice.

Hi Michael

At last I have uninstalled AVG from Vista (although it is still reported in
the security console - I think this may be the fact I can scan with AVG from
my other hard drive)

I selected the minimal install with Trend liked the fact it did an initial
scan before installing. Didn't like the fact Defender alert me to my firewall
being turned off when I had actually selected minimal without firewall -
confirmed as I don't have the configs for this. Even after re-boot I had to
trun firewall back on.

I have updated Trend and looked about the configs - still like NOD32 but at
least I have something which seems to be working. I was going to leave AVG
but discovered there was only one process running when normally AVG adds
quite a few plus not being able to configure was not so good.

Thanks for all the advice in this post and let's hope NOD will see Vista
when out of Beta :)

Have you ever used CrapCleaner?

It is a useful little program (free).

It has a registry cleaner. Not a particularly deep scan-
but it can fix some reference problems in the registry.
It allows you to make a backup before you apply any
changes. It also has a great temp files deleter. Does a
whole lot better than Disk Cleanup. I think the registry
cleaner make take care of the lingering AVG references.
On install, it will ask you to install the Yahoo toolbar-
watch for it and uncheck it if you don't want it.

I've never tried AVG, but they haven't done too well
with the VB100% award. Nod32 has more Virus Bulletin
awards than any AV. I think offering a free AV is a
nice thing to do. However, you often get what you
pay for. Of course, I would suggest free Avast any day
over the costly and bloated Symantec products. I beta
tested Windows OneCare. I didn't like it, but others do
and the pricing is very reasonable- you can put it on three
computers.

Eset says they will have a Nod Vista version ready by
the time Vista is final- I'm sure they will.

I am just trying to find right click scan on demand for a file I downloaded
but it's not there. I seem to have to use the console and work down the tree
to select one file.

Some nice features but I am definitely not a security suite person much
prefer to have contorl over individual software. I agree it is easy to setup
for people whereas NOD needs configurations if you really want to lock down
(which I do) I think I am missing NOD a lot on this computer but more
important to know we have protection atm.

I should have mentioned Trend doesn't have an option
added to the right-click context menu.

I use ClamWin in XP and it works in Vista.

It does integrate into the right-click menu for
on demand file and folder scans.

It's open source software. I like it. It doesn't
do active/real-time protection but it is handy
as a second opinion. It does have an
addin for Outlook, I don't use it.

I've had great luck with Avast! on the July CTP version of Vista.

right click is on Trend's request list although this will possibly be on the
full version after beta but at least it was a missing feature for others too
;)

EZ AV ranks right down there with AVG when comes to the
VB100% award- terrible.
