Large scale test of AV

The November test by AV-Test.org for PC Welt (in German):
http://www.pcwelt.de/index.cfm?pid=20&pk=64946
is surprising and confusing (to me) since the English translations
leave much to be desired, and I have no idea how the tests
were conducted. Perhaps someone can translate better and
expand on the nature of the tests.

Apparently, 83,000 worms, 86,000 Bots, 218,000 Trojans, and
79,000 Backdoors were used in this large scale test. I don't
understand what they mean by "zwischendurch" which translates
as "occasionally" or "now and then" or "here and there" or
"in the meantime" or "in between" (adv).

The surprise (to me) is that WebWasher scored tops, followed
by AntiVir, AVK2007 (no surprise that this one is up there),
Fortinet, AVK2006, Symantec, Kaspersky, F-Secure, Bitdefender,
Norman, Avast, NOD32, AVG, McAfee, Ikarus, Trend Micro,
Dr Web, Panda .... Using K-Meleon, clicking on the image of
results on that page yields a large pic image of the summary
of results.

I've just changed from NOD32 (v2.7) to Antivir - :)

The meaning isn't clear for me, either. (Although I'm a German
native speaker...) I'd guess, it refers to "solely web based
article *between* 2 print issues of PC Welt". The term "für
zwischendurch" is usually used for a little snack between
meals and the like.

IMHO, you shouldn't waste your time trying to get meaning out
of that test. The AV-Test GmbH is a company doing tests for
profit. Depending on testbed design and result interpretation
the outcome of their tests will probably go from debatable to
good. PC Welt has a computer novice / DAU oriented clientele.
Therefore you won't find any useful information needed to
interpret the test results, but senseless ranking of black
box results... :-(

I've used NOD32 for the past 3 or so years and only ever had one problem
with a single virus.

However, over the past couple of version I've notice that the memory usage
has steadily got bigger. NOD32 is still no resource eater like some are, but
on my 3yr old system it's beginning to show.

I removed NOD32 2.7 just to try antivir (free version first), MY system
flies again (well as fast as your normal 3yr old P4. I have bought the
premium version and have all the stuff turned on for maximum protection and
my system is visibly faster at everything.

I still like NOD, but as one other poster put it, it's showing signs of
'feature sprawl'.

Yes, well, Andreas's tests are a cut above the worthless PC magazine
tests, at least. It would really be nice to know the details of the
tests, including their malware sample screening methodology.

since you have to look at far more than one test.
