Automatic Update not working

I recently had to re-install Service Packs 1 & 2 to Windows XP Home, due to a
Non-destructive System Recovery on my HP computer, and since then I cannot
seem to get Automatic Updates working. If I access it through Tools, the
Update page tells me that it is "Checking for the lastest version....etc" but
nothing happens. If I go through the Security Centre, it tells me that "Auto
Updates are not yet configured for this computer". If I go to Control Panel
and select Automatic Updates, it takes forever for it to appear (sometimes it
doesn't) and when I chose Automatic Update and click OK, it will hang for
quite some time before it closes. All this, and it still does not work. I
am finding this very confusing, please help!

Go to Start/Run and enter "services.msc" minus the "", Click OK & expand the
window and look down for Background Intelligent Transfer Service (BITS). It
should be started and automatic. Right-click/Properties and you can set
both there. It in turn has another dependency. Remote Procedure Call (RPC)
those should be set similarly.
WU depends on these services to function.

Peter, thank you for the suggestion. I did as you suggested, but
unfortunately it did not correct the situation and I am still having the same
trouble.
