How to prevent automatic restart of computer at system update

Hello!

I was wondering if there was a way of "stopping" the automatic restart of my
computer each time Windows XP gets an automatic update. I am referring to
the process that happens in the right side of the task bar, that says that
Windows has a new update, and the fact that it will later give you a message,
saying that it is going to restart the computer for you, if you do not
postpone it (for the 10 minutes that it allows each time). If you happen to
not be at the computer at the time of the message, it will go ahead and
restart your computer, regardless of what documents are open or unsaved.

Is there any way of telling my system that it *doesn't* have permission to
restart the computer until I am ready for that? In other words, I am fine
with getting the automatic updates, but I'm wondering if there's any way to
tell the system not to restart itself on its own when it gets those updates,
and to allow *me* to decide when the computer can be restarted.

Is there a "check-box" to check off somewhere, or something of that nature,
in some type of control panel for the Windows XP updates on my computer?

Or might there be something else?

Thank you so much for your help!

Turn off the Automatic Updates and then you do the updates manually
periodically.

MS has made the "restart" because the update can / will update
settings / files that needs to be loaded at boot time.

Hi smlunatick!

Thank you for the reply!

Could you tell me how to turn off the automatic updates for the operating
system? Where would I find that on my computer?

Thank you so much!

Hi Smlunatick,

I found the controls under my System Properties (in the 'classic view' --
start/ control panel/ system/ automatic updates).

I chose the option of "Download updates for me, but let me choose when to
install them".

There is a link in the Automatic Updates page, where you make your choice,
to "How does Automatic Updates work?". In reading through that, I found:

(under the topic "Options for setting up Automatic Updates on your
computer", under the "Notes" section)

"Installing updates before you shut down your computer is another way to
keep your computer up to date and more secure. This option is available only
in Microsoft Windows XP with Service Pack 2 (SP2). "

I have SP3. Might you know what the information means with regard to SP3?

Thank you so much for your time and your help! It means a lot to me!

Hi ju.c!

Thank you for your response! I know you are supplying me with something
very valuable to my question, but I have to ask for your forgiveness in not
understanding what it is, as it is like a foreign language to me!

Could you expand for me?, (as I'm not very computer-literate as of yet). I
am thrilled to think there might be another alternative!

Thank you so much!

Just create this registry file then merge it into the registry:

This: "RebootRelaunchTimeout"=dword:0000003c sets the timeout
to 60 minutes.

1. Copy below and paste into Notepad.

----------copy inside only----------
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\WindowsUpdate\AU]
"NoAutoRebootWithLoggedOnUsers"=dword:00000001
"RebootRelaunchTimeoutEnabled"=dword:00000001
"RebootRelaunchTimeout"=dword:0000003c

----------copy inside only----------

2. Save-as AU_Tweaks.reg (or any name + .reg)

3. Double-click or right-click and merge into the registry.

4. Restart computer.
