Automatic Update setting inexcessible

HELP!

About a week or so ago, I noticed that I could no longer access the
automatic updates to change the time that it ran. I also noticed that during
a session with the Windows Update server, the web page no longer displayed
the message that my computer was set up to receive automatic updates (also
displays a link to change ht time).

It's like the supporting code to access the dialogue box presented by the
'Automatic Updates" tab no longer exists. All of the information is grayed
out, although it displays the current update time as 5:00PM every day.

Is this a resource permission problem (Owner has administrator access and
rights), or has the update process inadvertently removed code that would
permit the updating of auto update frequency and time?

1. Check the Service Manager for "Automatic Update" service
Click Start, select Run and type: Services.msc
Press Enter
Locate the - "Automatic Update"
Make sure the service is not disabled and started.

2. If the service is disabled and cannot be started:

Go to START, Select RUN
Type: regsvr32 wuaueng.dll
Press Ok

3. If all else fails:-

Windows Update Greyed Out - Restore (Line 179)

Automatic Updates options are grayed out?:
http://windowsxp.mvps.org/aupolicy.htm

You receive a "Windows Update has encountered an error and cannot display the
requested page" error message when you try to install an update

The Automatic Updates service is missing

Good morning (EST),

The first two points were checked and worked out fine.

The second item under point 3 appeared to be problematic at first, because
my XP Home Edition does not contain a group policy edit capability using
GPEDIT.MSC as the proc does not exist in my version.

However, I mis-read the procedure on this web site
(http://windowsxp.mvps.org/aupolicy.htm) because it appeared to describe XP
generically, but in fact it is clear to me now that the first half of the
solution refers to XP (generally) and the second half refers to XP
Professional.

No harm done.

One point though, the second step in this procedure outlines:

" HKEY_CURRENT_USER \ SOFTWARE \ Microsoft \ Windows \ CurrentVersion \
Policies \ WindowsUpdate

* In the right-pane, delete the value DisableWindowsUpdateAccess "

However, when I reached this folder there was no sub-folder for
WindowsUpdate.*

* NOTE: (Yes, I know, as much as all PC’s running XP ‘should’ be identical,
for what ever reason, they often look different!)

None-the-less, I followed the first part of this solution and presto, the
access was back on Windows Updates and the notification re-appeared in the
Windows Update web search page!

Success!

Thank you very much for your help.
