Prevent Downloaded Update from Installing

My Windows Update downloaded IE8 despite the fact that I have my Automatic
Settings set to only automatically download Critical updates.

I have not yet allowed the IE8 download to install.

How can I delete the download and remove the it so that Windows Update no
longer believes that there there is an Update ready to install?

Where do I locate the file on my machine that is the unwanted IE8 download in
order to delete it?

It should be in:
C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution\Download

BTW: Windows seems to view IE8 as a "critical update", so to be in full
control of the updates you want or don't want, you can turn off Automatic
Update (although not recommended by Microsoft).

Well, I have multiple files in that directory. Delete them all? Only the IE8
download is showing in the Windows Update dialog.

If your previous updates have installed properly, you can safely delete the
contents of that directory.

To find out what software, hardware, drivers, critical updates etc. you
have on your computer, get Belarc Advisor (freeware). It creates an HTML
file, which your browser will open automatically, and it lists all updates
installed, as well as those that need reinstalling.

You could try a different approach.

Open Control Panel and click on Automatic Updates. Check the
option "Download updates for me, but let me choose when to
install them". This will improve your control over the
installation of all updates. For even greater control, you could
select the option "Notify me but don't automatically download or
install them".

Next, open Internet Explorer. Run Windows Update
(http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com) and click on "Custom
Update".

The search result will list IE8 as a High Priority Update.
Remove the check against IE8, to remove it from the list
of programs to be installed. Then, click on the + symbol and
check the option labelled "Don't show this update again".

The download will remain on your hard drive, so you could
install it at a later date, if you change your mind. However,
Windows Update won't install IE8 automatically and hopefully, it
shouldn't invite you to install the program again.

Ignore the muppets who have replied so far. If you want to block ANY of the
Microsoft update patches, you need to set your Automatic Updates to:
"Download updates for me and let me choose when to install". This is the
second item in the list.

Now when you get the prompt in the task bar that updates have been downloaded
(normally a yellow shield in the windows taskbar on the right bottom corner)
you click on it and select CUSTOM installs. this allows you to choose which
updates to install and which to reject outright.

You are then asked another question whether you want to be reminded of updates
NOT installed this time. You say NO.

That is all you have to do. This method also allows you NOT to install that
dreaded Microsoft spyware called WGA! PLEASE DON'T DOWNLOAD ANY SOFTWARE
WHICH PAULM IS DISTRIBUTING BECAUSE IT MAY BE A SPYWARE. YOU DON'T KNOW PAUL
OR ANYBODY HERE SO DON'T DOWNLOAD ANY RECOMMENDED SOFTWARE UNLESS THEY ARE
FROM MICROSOFT OR OTHER REPUTABLE PLACES.

Hope this helps.

I already had my Windows Update set to install at my imperious command, I
just couldn't figure out how to prevent the IE8 from installing after Windows
Update downloaded it. I delete the files and went back to the site to have it
rescan the PC and the checked the 'Don't show this update again' box. I'm
always leery of WU and Billy boy looking at my machine.

The gold shield has been vanquised.

I'm leery about running any script that's suggest to me, especially when it
has Windows VISTA all over it and I'm running XP.

At any rate, you didn't answer the question. The download had ALREADY been
pulled down to the machine. But I've got it sorted out. (See the link I post
further below).

thx though

Pardon me, but I have no fraggin' idea as to who you are, your reputation and
your motives. I don't just run scripts on my machine from just anybody.
Furthermore, how do I know that your site wasn't recently compromised and the
script replaced with something malicious? What if your DNS has been hijacked?

That script was for XP, not Vista.

All my scripts can be viewed in notepad.

Like I would post on here to download scripts that would mess up yours or
someone computer.
