Prevent Downloaded Update from Installing

All my scripts can be viewed in notepad.

Like I would post on here to download scripts that would mess up yours or
someone computer.

Paul, you might want to consider that most people don't have a clue who
you are and it's ALWAYS unwise to trust any "script" from anyone, even
when the person downloading it knows how to code - and most people in
these groups don't.

There is almost always a commercial site to download fixes from, a real
MVP site to download fixes from, reputable sources that have already
been validated.....

I don't know you from a pile of beans, and I've been coding since the
70's, and I would not download your suff either - but it's nothing
personal against/about you, it's just common safety sense.

I'm glad my suggestion worked for you.

Like you, I was very wary about installing IE8.

I use two computers, both of which run Win XP (SP3). (The laptop
has XP Professional, the desktop uses XP Home Edition). I
distrust major new releases from Microsoft. I prefer to let
other people discover any bugs, so I waited at least one month
before I took the giant leap and installed IE8 on my laptop. And
before doing so, I took several precautions:

a) I always prefer to use full installation files for major
release in preference to any Windows Update version (if they are
available). Consequently, I downloaded the full installation
file (IE8-WindowsXP-x86-ENU.exe) from
www.microsoft.com/windows/internet-explorer/default.aspx.
b) Prior to installation, I disabled my anti-virus software
and windows defender. I also switched off Zone Alarm firewall
and enabled the Windows firewall.

Fortunately, I experienced no problems whatsoever and I have to
say that I think IE8 is better than IE7 - and a great improvement
over IE6. Even so, I waited a further month, before I installed
it on my desktop computer. Again, I experienced no problems
whatsoever.

I am not sure why you have decided not to install IE8. You
probably share my misgivings. However, IE8 does seem to work
well for most people (judging by the absence of too many
complaints on this newsgroup). I certainly have no regrets. You
might wish to re-consider at a later date.

I'm leery about running any script that's suggest to me, especially when it
has Windows VISTA all over it and I'm running XP.

At any rate, you didn't answer the question. The download had ALREADY been
pulled down to the machine. But I've got it sorted out. (See the link I post
further below).

thx though

You don't seem that smart. VBscript works from Windows 2000 to
Windows 7 (including XP and Vista) and you can view the source of it.

And he did answer the question if you looked at how the script works.
It adds a registry key to block IE8 from being installed.

The next time you ask for help, don't be a dick about it.

No, that's just being overly paranoid. Take off your tinfoil hat, a
script can't do anything unless you run it and it's even less
dangerous if you view the source. Even if you can't code you can at
least see which registry key it affects.
