Automatic restart

In this group I was advised to cancel automatic restart in the hope
that I might see a more informative message. I quote the resulting
message at the end of this post.

Originally it was my friend who had the problem but I am suffering
too, now. The only connection between us is that we live a mile apart,
have the same ISP and our PC's are configured much the same.

I have several partitions. The C: partition is exclusively for XP and
application software, with one exception. My email application runs
from partition G: The other partitions are for self created data.

In the past couple of months I have installed a canonscan LIde 25 and
a Trust wireless mouse.

I am considering restoring an image of C: from before the new
hardware. Would that be a sensible approach (running a bog standard
mouse)?

The error message follows:
A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent
damage to your computer.

IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL

If this is the first time you've seen this stop error screen,
restart your computer. If this screen appears again follow
these steps:

Check to make sure any new hardware or software is properly installed.
If this is a new installation, ask your hardware or software
manufacturer
for any windows updates you might need.

If problems continue, disable or remove any newl;y installed hardware
or software. Disable BIOS memory options such as caching or shadowing.
If you need to use safe mode to remove or disable components, restart
your computer, press F8 to select Advanced Startup Options, and then
select safe mode.

Technical Information:

"Stop error 0x0000000A (Stop 0x0A) indicates that there was an attempt in
kernel mode to touch pageable memory at too high a process internal request
level (IRQL). Typically, this error occurs when a driver uses an incorrect
memory address. Other possible causes of this error are an incompatible
device driver, a general hardware problem, and incompatible software. "

So, remove newer hardware and disable newer drivers with MSCONFIG. Add
them back in one at a time till you trigger the STOP error again.

Hi Colin,

Since I am having a similar problem to yours, I would advise you to
first uninstall the Canonscan LIde 25 and remove its software. Do not
reinstall the software. Run the computer a couple of days. See if the error
comes back. If the error comes back, then you know it was not the Scanner
causing the problem, but the Mouse Drivers. Report the problem to the
Manufacturer of the Mouse and if it new drivers for the mouse are available
and reinstall the Scanner.

After a couple of days, with no errors, reinstall the Canonscan LIde 25.
If you get the error again, then look for new drivers for the Canonscan.

Sorry for the delay - I've been away.

After I uninstalled the latest Skype upgrade I have had no trouble at
all.

Best wishes
