Automatic Restarts on Turn Off Computer

My computer and my wife's both started to perform automatic restarts when
closing down within days of each other in early April. We can't turn off our
computers without turning the power button off.

Both computers are only 2-3 years old and are running windows XP.

I've tried everything - defragging both machines checking memory (plenty of
space) and running antivirus checks which are all clear. I've got 1 GB Ram in
each and fast processors and everything else seems to be running normally.

The only thing I can think of - given the above circumstances - is that
we've automatically downloaded a Microsoft update which has clashed with some
of the Drivers.

I've unticked restart in both computers to get a blue screen and I am
getting the following blue screen information on shut down;-

A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage
to your computer.
IRQL-NOT-LESS-OR-EQUAL
If this is the first time you’ve seen this stop error screen restart your
computer. If this screen appears
again, follow these steps.
Check to make sure any new hardware or software is property installed.
If this is a new installation, ask your hardware or software manufacturer
for any window updates you
might need.
If problems continue, disable or remove any newly installed hardware of
software, DISABLE BIOS
memory options such as caching or shadowing.
If you need to use safemode to remove or disable components, restart your
computer, PMSS F8 to
select Advanced Startup Options, and then select Safe Mode.

Can anyone out there help with this one.

And if you start in Safe Mode does it then shutdown correctly?

STOP: 0x0000000A is often a hardware driver problem, have you used MS
Update & installed any HW drivers?
Update history will tell you

Yes, Andy, actually, I think I have an answer for you. My guess is
that you have the Sony DVD HandyCam Picture Package Software
installed. My understanding is that the USB driver that it installs
for the camera gets "broken" by one of the Microsoft Updates that came
out after the software was written. Sony (at the time of this
writing) has no fix for it; it's version 1.8, I think, of the
software; but their workaround is to go to Control Panel, Add/Remove
programs, find the Sony Handycam USB Driver (or something very
similar) and remove it. After that, I'm guessing your computer will
work just fine.
