automatic install up SP2

G

gerryR

Hi all

Just found this (I'm sure most of you know about it)
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/prodtechnol/winxppro/maintain/sp2aumng.mspx

But from tomorrow SP2 will automatically be downloaded. Just wondering if
there is any way to postpone this even further, I know we should have SP2
installed all ready but we don't and I'd rather spend a day or 2 installing
it on all our PCs than have everyone's PC download them and hog our network
tomorrow !!

Anyone any ideas ?
Thanks for any help

If you have broadband, download the file today. If you have dial-up, get the
CD.

We have over 100 PCs, I will get around to installing it over the next
couple of days but in the mean time I don't want our PCs to download it
automatically (I also don't wany to have to go around and turn off automatic
updates on each PC )

thanks

It may download it but it won't install it until you agree to the EULA. If
you don't want it to download, you'll have to disable AU on all 100 PCs.

I would get the CD whether you have broadband or not.

Turn of Auto Update. Personally, I think you are a moron for having it
on in the first place.

Thanks for letting me know gerryR.

LOL! You are responsible for 100 PCs, rely on Auto Update to patch your
systems, and waited until it is pratically too late for it to be
downloaded by those 100 PCs tomorrow, and now you are looking for an
easy fix for both your stupidity and laziness?

You should be fired!

FYI we have 3 offices and I only work in one of them, I have plenty of time
to update the pcs here but was just wondering if there was a way to delay it
so we could do all the offices over the weekend for example.

I've usually got good friendly advice for this group but I guess you can't
alway expect that.

The fact that you would waste your "valuable" time to insult someone makes
me wonder "Should you be fired ??" maybe being a di<khead is a requirement
for your job.

I'm not at work.

And my advise is that you should look for employment that better suits
your talents. Now who would want a lazy & stupid procrastinator?

I am certainly not an expert in these matters, but if your 100+ computers
are on the same network you should be able administer them from one computer
with administrator privileges using a group policy and a single copy of the
SP2 install files. I believe this is how it was done at the company I work
for. Of course, I could be wrong.

Cheers for the reply. We're going to turn off auto-updates through GP and
look into SUS over the next few days.

Thanks for the info

The downloads won't consume any significant portion of your network
bandwidth - it happens slowly, in the background, and is randomly spread
out.

Have you thought about just turning off Automatic Updates? That's the
simplest way to postpone the installation of an update you don't want or
aren't ready for.

One should NEVER have had autoupdates turned on in the first place.

Actually the average user should have automatic updates enabled, but with
the prompt option ticked. But now as I type this, that is as dangerous for
the average user. They are likely to click install without reading what the
update is for. It would be better if the option to install was not an option
before reading about the update or warnings about the update.

Isn't there a "stop-restart" (I forget the proper word) function for
the download?

"Stop-restart" = resume. You can just allow it to download, SP2 will not
actually install until you accept the EULA for it. Until the a little
icon will sit nicely in the notification area and remind you when you
login that an update is ready to install.
