Attachments changed on sending

I use Outlook 2000 SR-1 for my email. Recently when I attach a file when it
reaches the recipient it has been changed to a file named "winmail.dat" which
is not the file attached. It happens with all attachments, .jpg; .doc; .xls
and they all end up changed to the same thing. Can anyone suggest how to fix
this?

Stop using RTF (Rich-Text Format) when composing e-mails. It is a
MIcrosoft proprietary format that other e-mail clients cannot
understand. Even Microsoft recommends using RTF only between sender and
recipient that are within the same Exchange-Outlook organization. When
sending e-mails to Internet recipients, and unless you can guarantee
that they use Microsoft's e-mail clients (Outlook or Outlook Express),
use HTML or plain-text format for composing your mails.

Thank you Vanguard. That seems to have sorted it. What I don't understand is
why it suddenly started doing this as I have been using Rich Text for years
and there has been no problem with attachments until now. Hey Ho!

Thanks for the post, I'm trying to help a friend who's having this problem.
Do you know why the format of the message affects the attachments?

Because Outlook is built that way.

Did your recipient (the one that supposedly used to receive it okay
before but not now) change to a different e-mail program? Maybe they
are still using Outlook [Express] but configured it to read all e-mails
in plain-text mode?
