ATI Radeon 9800 Pro + EIZO T965 21" = blurry image!

Hi, I just bought a new PC with a Sapphire ATI Radeon 9800 Pro and an EIZO
T965 21" monitor. I have it set up to 1600x1200 at 85Hz. The problem is that
the image is not as sharp as it should be. Text is blurry and have a white
cast. At 1024x768, the problem is barely noticable, but as I increase the
screen resolution, the problem gets bigger.

If I lower the refresh rate to 60Hz, the problem disappears. Text is then
very sharp, even at 2048x1536 , but of course, I cannot work at 60Hz. The
monitor is capable of 2048x1536 at 80 Hz and the graphics adapter 2048x1536
at 85 Hz. I have done extensive testing with all the monitor's settings, so
wrong adjustment can't be the problem. I also have the latest drivers for
the graphics adapter.

Is this a problem with my graphics adapter or the monitor? Any ideas?

Make sure that your monitor.inf file is installed for your specific monitor.
Without that XP defaults to a Plug and Play Monitor whose settings may not
match your monitor properly. Check to see what monitor you have installed
in Device Manager.

Do you use a monitor extension cable? I had a similar problem until I
bypassed the extension cable by pluging the monitor cable directly into the
video card which fixed it.

You are right! Win XP shows "Plug and Play Monitor". But according to the
installation instructions for the monitor, you shouldn't install the
INF-file for XP, only for Win98, 2000 and NT. Anyway, I was able to make XP
see my T965 INF-file after unchecking the Show Compatible Hardware option.
After installing it, I couldn't see much improvement in image quality, but
XP was now able to better manage the different refresh rates for each
resolution, which is important.

Then, I reset my monitor using the reset option in the OSD menu. This gave
me a much clearer image! Not as good as it should be, but a lot better than
it was, at least for small type/characters. Large or bold characters suffer
from a white cast on the right side. Anyway, it is now possible to work at
2048x1536 which has been my goal! Thank you for your help!

I use only the standard VGA cable that came with the monitor. I have BNC
connectors on the monitor. Maybe I should buy a BNC-cable and use those
inputs instead? Can I expect an improvement in image quality by doing that?

(Check also my answer in the other thread. The image quality is much better
now, at least for small type/characters. But still, only when I lower the
refresh rate to 60Hz, I get the sharpness I am looking for).

Not sure. I know I used to have an extension cable for my vga input from my
monitor and had the same ghost effect on the letters that you seem to have.
Once I plugged directly into the video card, bypassing the extension cable,
it corrected my problem.

BNC cable will not work. Been there done that with a blurry Nokia monitor a
couple of years ago.

You might find an inf file for XP at the monitor manufacturer's website. If
not, the Win 2000 inf file should work just fine...which is I guess what you
did. Excellent.

Remeber this is a LCD not CRT...
You have no reason to set refresh rate over 60Hz.
With digital connection this is the default rate
and can't be changed (normally).

....and I think a jewel like this deserve a DVI cable. :)

Ops..... T965 not L985
I see LCDs everywhere......... ^_^

You have any reason to increase r.r.

What mistake did I allegedly make?

You said:
"Why not? LCD's don't flicker like CRT's do."

But the T965 is a CRT.
I have confused it with L985.
Makes sense.

3 CRT vs. 18 LCD models.
The future is coming... :)
