I have two Viewsonic P817 monitors attached to a RADEON 9800 Pro, each
running 2048x1536 desktops under Windows 2000. I'm finding that the P817
attached to the 15-pin analog port can run at 85 Hz, whereas the P817
attached to the digital video port can only do 75 Hz. As soon as I try 85
Hz on the monitor attached to digital video, it not only fails to sync, but
gets a red status light that can only be cleared by rebooting.

Is there a known limitation that prevents the digital video port from
syncing at the same speeds as the 15-pin analog port?

Have you checked that your monitor can support this rate via the DVI port?
Many monitors won't support DVI refresh rates quite as high as they do on
analogue. Don't ask me why, it seems stupid to me, but there you go.

Because refresh rates don't work in the same way on TFT screens as CRT
and don't need to be as high.

Sorry, but I think you misunderstood my question. Let me paraphrase it:

"I don't understand why some TFT screens support higher refresh rates via
their analogue ports than they do through their DVI ports".

in the display panel "monitor" turn off "use DDC" then you can set in anything to your
little hearts desire.
be advised though - IF the DDC info IS checked (on) and only goes to 75 hz, then that is
what you should be using.

hope this helps,
