ATI 9600 AIW Record Volume Up and Down :(

I got a ATI 9600 AIW and when I record the playback volume goes up and down.
It usually goes from soft to loud and then drops off back to soft. It works
fine when watching TV - no problems whatsoever with anything when watching.

I upgraded the video driver and multimedia apps software to the latest
version (8.8) and it made no change.

Here are my pertinient settings:
ATI Multimedia Center Configuration > TV > TV Capture Source=ATI Rage
Theater Video Capture (funny but in the Driver: line it says its
unsupported).

In the TV on mode "TV Setup" applet:
PVR Tab > Recording Preset = DVD (Mpeg-2, 720x480, NTSC, 48k 16bit stereo

VideoSoap for the DVD Preset is "Light"

I am using my digital Cable signal's analog channels.

My Sound Card:
I have a DFI Lanparty motherboard with a P4-2.8HT. The sound chip is built
in to the motherboard. The chip is Intel but the app that controls it is
"C-Media" I'm using the AIW card's line out and plugging it into the line in
jack of my sound card's header panel.

Settings for playback - The usual - everything is about 3/4 up. Using an old
Altec Lansing 2.1 speaker system. Mute/Unmute/Volume of Line In (Playback)
causes the sound go up/down/mute/unmute so I'm sure that the wires are
hooked up properly.

Settings for Recording - Line In is selected. 3/4 of the way up.

I have a crappy but dependable WinTV USB 1.0 that I used to use and was
hooked up the exact same way for recording and it worked fine (well, except
dropped frames and not as good picture but I digress). I removed all of the
associated software for it just in case.

There seems to be something monitoring the sound input volume during
recording that is not happy and is trying to adjust the volume. Maybe
something's line level's are mismatched??

Help? I'm ready to give up. I don't want to buy another sound card because
the built in does what I need. I'm not into 5.1 on my PC (I have a very good
Sony Home Theater system in my living room). I don't ever watch TV. I only
record shows that I'm remotely interested in and they're unwatchable with
the crazy sound.

I also want to convert my VCR tapes of the family into DVD (already have DVD
burner and DV Cam w/firewire that works fine).

I doubt I'm the only person to have this problem but I've tried to search
and can't find anything on this issue.

TIA.

You are NOT the only one having this problem. See the thread:

ati 9000 AIW sound problems during recording

I spent much of the last several days trying to fix this problem with no
success. My guess is that it's caused by ATI's automatic gain control. I sent a
problem report to ATI last Monday; I promise to post any fixex. If I'm REALLY
lucky, some nice engineer at ATI will send me a driver with AGC disabled...
