ATA/EIDE Not SCSI

I recently installed a new Maxtor 160 GB drive. Disk manager reports it as a
"maxtor SCSI Disk Device."

This cannot be correct because this is one of three Maxtor drives installed.
The other two drives are reposted "Maxtor ######." The words "SCSI Disk
Device" Do not follow after "Maxtor #####" like it does on the new Maxtor
160GB Device recently installed.

The 160GB is connected to a Ultra ATA/133 controller card. This card is
present in
Disk Manager.

Any info will be greatly appreciated.

I don't know what your statement means, but thanks.

I wrote an earlier question "Event Log Error Message." This is the place
where my problem starts.

Can't copy info onto the 160GB drive. System freezes. If my read of your
answer is correct, the fact that Device Manager lists the 160GB drive as a
"SCSI Disk Device" is not the cause of my problem.

If not the cause what is my next step?

I am reloading everything and haven't gotten to this step yet.

PS - Do you know of any issues before I go there, as relates to anti virus
software? Should I install before or after I go on line to upgrade and get
downloads?

Intuitively, I my answer is istall antivirus software befofre going on line
to get anything. So, I am looking for a second opinion.

For any new install it is imperative that you install these before
connecting to any network or you'll be almost immediately infected.

I'm not aware of any problems or issues with Win2K SP1~SP4 with any AV software.

The best thing you can do is slipstream Win2K with SP4 and install using that. This way you
will have the patches for many vulnerabilities MINUS RPC/DCOM and LSASS. Therefore AV
software should be installed ASAP and also a FireWall software to prevent Internet worm
infections before HotFixes and post SP4 updates.

Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer (867801). (This is third
on your list of updates.)

All downloads are to my laptop and stored there. I will copy to CD and
install on my desktop from this CD.

Since the only 64bit is WinXP (and you asked in a Win2K News Group) and is very expensive,
you would know if you had the 64bit OS ;-)

So the answer is the 32bit.

I downloaded, moved to my desktop, attempted to install and hit another wall.

Receiving an error message

............"If this error persists after you have clicked Retry several
times, go to the Windows Service Pack Web site and select "Problem
Downloading Service Pack." This will give you instructions.........

Simple enough instructions but still hit the wall.

My Windows 2000 Service Packs page does not contain "Problems Downloading
Service Pack." Fished around for it on follow up pages and still can't find
it.

Got any info on this?

choose the network download?

Dave,

I downloaded the express download and not the network download. I made this
decision after reading the instructions on the web page.

I am installing on a stand alone computer and not a network computer. Do I
still use the network download?

I started on this web page:
http://www.microsoft.com/windows2000/downloads/servicepacks/default.asp

Then, I clicked on each download page and followed instructions for express
download. Again, I used express download after reading instructions.

The difference is the express download will require an active internet
connect to complete the install which you probably don't want at this point.

Install SP4 then install all HotFixes posted AFTER SP4 was posted.

As Dave P. indicated, download the SP4, ~129MB, executable and install it.
