I suddenly aquired a new "User" on my computer named ASP.NET after running
Ghost 9. Ghost said I had to install .net software before it would run. This
is buggering up my windows start as I now have to select my name as "User"
before Windows XP will finish loading. Can I delete this ASP.NET without
screwing anything else up?[/QUOTE]

The .Net framework comes from Microsoft and it does not "bugger up" your computer - that problem came from you.

Asp.net is created when you install the .Net framework. It's not a user account, and it's used primarily by .Net developers. It does not affect the operation of your computer. If it's bothering you, remove it (from Control Panel > User Accounts.)

Hi, but if you've got a ATI radeon card with the latest drivers and the
catalyst control centre you will require .net to run the control centre...

Hi, yeah, mis-read the post didn't I, duhhhh, realise that you put to only
delete the account, not .net framework...
ChrisC
The .net framework is much more than the asp.net account.

I can relate to jetjock's post -- I have also acquired the .Net
framework/asp.net on my laptop for no apparent reason. Windows NT seems to
have taken over what used to be Windows XP. I did not download this -- at
least not on purpose! I believe it happened after I received a Windows
update.

I have no desire to develop a website and would love for someone to tell me
how I can get rid of all this stuff without messing up my laptop. Can you
tell me how that can be accomplished? Some of the files I have include IIS,
asp.net v.1 and v.2, sql (which I believe is causing a variety of problems)
which I cannot uninstall because there is a missing file.

If you can help me I would be forever grateful! I am on a Dell 8600 running
Windows XP Pro SP2, and is not networked with any other computer - no one
else uses it. It's just me and my laptop!

Gratefully yours,
patti

First, Windows XP is really Windows NT 5.1.

Second, if you do not need .NET Framework, I certainly don't, uninstall it,
I have.

Uninstall .NET Framework...

Click Start and Control Panel and double-click Add Or Remove Programs.
Scroll down the list until you find the entry for the .NET Framework and
uninstall it.

If an important program on your PC requires the .NET Framework in order to
run, visit http://msdn.microsoft.com/netframework

and download the necessary version. To find older versions, such as 1.0,
expand the Previous Versions link on the left, expand the entry for the
version you want to download, and click Technology Updates. Links appear
that let you download the software and any necessary Service Packs.

Help, How do I remove the .NET Framework?

Thank you for your response --

I already went to the add/remove programs to delete it. The only one that
showed was v. 1 so I removed it (I still have v.1 files though). .NET
Framework v.2 does not show up on my programs list (nor do several other
programs I have).

I went to the link you provided
(http://www.dotnet247.com/247reference/msgs/28/141011.aspx) and read the
instructions on deleting the various files. I have no problelm with handling
this but it says I may need to boot in safe mode and, at the risk of sounding
totally inept, I'm not sure I know how to do that!

I have not yet checked the microsoft link to check on programs I may be
running that need Net framework but will take that step before I delete it.

To start the computer in safe mode
1. (Re)start your computer.
2. When the machine first starts again it will generally list some
equipment that is installed in your machine, amount of memory, hard
drives installed etc. At this point you should gently tap the F8 key
repeatedly until you are presented with a Windows XP Advanced Options
menu.
3. Select the option for Safe Mode using the arrow keys on your keyboard.
(NUM LOCK must be off before the arrow keys on the numeric keypad will
function.)
4. Then press enter on your keyboard to boot into Safe Mode.
5. Do whatever tasks you require and when you are done reboot to boot back
into normal mode.

If Windows launches before you can choose a safe mode, restart your computer
and try again.
