Archive Bit and Backup

Robert

I am new to backup and would like to know whether it is right.

Archive bit will be reset when we perform full backup and incremental
backup.

For differential backup, the archive bit will not be reset, in this way,
the number of files that have been altered since last backup will have
archive bit turned on (Increased each day). All files with the archive bit
turned on will be backed up in differential backup. When we perform a full
backup, the archive bit will be turned off ?

Besides, someone says that if the backup software cannot reset the archive
bit, there are other alternatives like "Timestamp" or "Size stamp" is used,
is it correct ?

Thanks

I would imagine that would depend on the backup software. I know that
feature doesn't exist in ntbackup and don't ever recall seeing it in Backup
Exec. There should be no reason backup software and the account its running
under could not have permissions to change the archive bit state. After all
the account doing the back up has to have sufficent rights to see the files
and back them up.
