Applications failing to initialize-No programs will launch off des

Starting last night out of the blue I lost the ability to doubleclick a
shortcut to launch a program or go through the start button to launch a
program. I am able to log on here because the my connection manager from my
isp is in my system tray. Everything in there is able to be
used(firewall,anti-virus, etc). I tried to use system restore in safe mode
under the administrator login but it said it was unable to help me. I've
tried using restore in safe mode in each of the 4 accounts on here and
everytime its unsucessful. The exact error message I get reads"The
application failed to initialize properly (0xc0000142). Click OK to terminate
the application." I'm at a total loss at what to do. Any help would be
greatly appreciated.

This error message occurs when I try to run any program. I don't have Easy CD
Creator on my computer at all.

Hi,

Try repairing the .lnk (shortcut) file association. Go to www.dougknox.com
and look under WinXP Fixes, file association fixes. Doug has an automated
fixfor this.

Do you have Zone Alarm installed, if so is it showing up in the task
bar? I had a similar problem which was caused by a late version of zone
alarm, going back to an ealier version fixed the problem (zone labs are
aware of stability problems and have been endevouring to fix it in the
latest versions)

I would really like to try what you suggest since I'm grasping at most any
idea that makes sense at this point. My only concern is how do I go back to
a previous version of Zone Alarm? I do have a few different versions saved on
my computer but I am wondering how I uninstall the entire program then
reinstall a previous update in the command prompt.

goto this site http://www.donhoover.net/uninstall.html they have a
tutorial on doing a clean uninstall.

You can get earlier versions of Zone alarm at
http://www.zonelabs.com/store/content/support/zap/zapMain.jsp?lid=ps_zap
the version i use is 4.5.594.000 which is known to be a stable version.

when i get time i will be trying the latest version to see if the
problem for me has been rectified.
But i suggest just doing the uninstall first then reboot and see if the
problem has gone, we could be barking up the wong tree.

I just wanted you to know that is exactly what the issue was all along. I
had to use the command line to uninstall ZoneAlarm but that cleared up
everything. It just bothers me that I have to use an less up to date
firewall now. Now Windows works the way it used to. Many many thanks go out
to those who helped me Darkknight in particular who pinpointed the problem.
My Christmas just got a whole lot merrier.
