Application installation errors

Windows XP home edition SP1.
First Error Problem
I have symantec corp. v9.0 that will not install. I have gone through all
the steps on symantecs site. And still can't get it to install.

I get this error in the XP Application log.

The description for Event ID 13 in source (symantec antivirus) cannot be
found. The local computer may not have all the necessary registy information
or message dll files to display message from a remote computer.

Symantec AV installs up to 99% complete. It gets to the end of Configuring
settings, then backs out. I have deleteed all registry settings, run
removal applications, scrubbed the drive for any "symantec files" checked
for older versions, checked permissions.

Second Error problem: Got to the step in symantec troubleshooting page
where it tells me to install the latest MDAC 2.8. Well, installing the MDAC
2.8 it too fails. This is the error.

INF install Failure. Reason: A certificate chain processed, but terminated
in a root certificate which is not trusted by the trust provider.

I have run SFC /scannow against the OS. I think the INF error may also be
causing Symantec to fail as well.

Third error.
Also, i tried running the SP2 against the OS and it too is failing with an
error about the Cryptographic service not running. I checked the Services
and the Cryptographic service is started.

I am at the point of just blowing it away and starting over.

Any suggestions otherwise?

Thanks

This finally fixed the Can't install SP2 issue and the Symantec Issue...
~~~~~~~~
Start off by entering the following into the run dialog - regsvr32
softpub.dll
Then register the following dll files by opening the run box again and
typing regsvr32 and the name of the following files (one at a time).
Wintrust.dll, Initpki.dll, Dssenh.dll, Rsaenh.dll, Gpkcsp.dll, Sccbase.dll,
Slbcsp.dll, Mssip32.dll, and Cryptdlg.dll.
~~~~~~~
If i had read the following post, the fixdb.bat file would also have worked.

Thanks.
