Install Error: 10

I get the following error message when trying to reinstall Symantec
LiveUpdate. The Symantec folks had me uninstall LiveUpdate because they said
my files were corrupted, but I have been unable to reinstall. They do not
seem to have a clue on how to resolve this error. Please note that I am
logged on with Administrator priviledges.

Install Error: 10
The LiveUpdate install failed because LiveUpdate was not able to register
one of its components. You need to have write access to the registry to
install LiveUpdate.

Hmm that certianly sounds like it would be up to Symantec to troubleshoot.

Are you using "the" admin account, or another account that you gave admin
priviledges? I can't think of a reason off the top of my head why any admin
account would have difficulty writing to the registry, but I'd try using
another account just for the hell of it.

Possibly see if you can get instructions from Symantec on how to manually
remove all components of LiveUpdate. I recently had an install issue with
McAfee, and they sent me instructions of every DLL, registry key, and file
folder I needed to remove manually. After that mind-numbing process, the
installer worked fine for me. I'm not going to venture to say this is a
similar problem, but it's worth a shot.

Hi,

"They do not seem to have a clue"

That should be *your* first clue as to why so many do not use Symantec
software. My recommendation, if you want to use this bloated software, is to
run one of the many clean up tools Symantec has on their support site. At a
guess, I'd say the registry key(s) from the original installation is still
there and your account no longer has write (full) privileges to it. It
should be somewhere under HKLM\Software, right click the key to access
permissions.
