application error explorer.exe

When opening some folders or accessing them from apps the errors
(multiple, with different addresses) occur within 10 seconds, popoup:
application error explorer.exe - instruction at <address> referenced
memory at <address>, memory could not be "read" (sometimes "write") -
ok and the application will be closed, cancel for debug.
Explorer then closes and restarts.

Event log reports:
Event type: Error
Event origin: Application Error
Evevt category: None
Event ID: 1000 (sometimes 1001)
Date: 29/06/2006
Time: 16.39.29
User: N/A
Description:
Application that caused the error explorer.exe, version 6.0.2900.2180,
module that caused the error unknown, version 0.0.0.0, error address
0x032a3206.

I have tried scans (adaware, ewido, avg), checked RAM (windiag) and HD
(chkdsk). File names in the problematic folders are not overly long,
usually .avi.

I'm at a loss, is formatting the only option?
Thanks

This may be the problem: you explorer is trying to give you a preview of the
video file but cannot open it and so it hungs up. Check what CODEC you have
installed, maybe the problem lies in one of them.
Hope this helps...

i'm having the same problem. when i open a folder containing one or more
..AVI files, i get that explorer.exe error. it occured randomly one day and
has continued since. i've tried reinstalling the codec(s) and/or using
different ones, reinstalling WMP (upgrading from 10 to beta 11 didn't work
either), repairing windows with the OS CD...and nothing's worked. it ONLY
occurs with .AVI files, not mpeg, wmv, etc. is formatting the only option?
i really don't want to do so as i'd need to backup a LOT of files, not to
mention reinstall a lot of software...

I get his same problem when working with a folder containing many different
types of movie files but after reading your posts i assume that its the .avi
files. The error occurs immediately when ever i try to change the "view"
options on the folder so that its not trying to give me previews on the
files. Otherwise it will occur after a short time period of opening the
folder any help appreciated as i dont want to delete the files.
