appearance of desktop

For some reason my desktop is split with the taskbar raised above the bottom
of the screen then below it there is a black bar then the top of the screen
appears at the bottom. If I move the cursor to the top of the screen it
appears at the bottom I've tried all sorts of things like altering the
display appearance and going back to a restore point but it remains the same.
Can anyone help please?

Adjust the height of the screen image with the buttons/switches on the
