"An exception occured while trying to run

I get this error message "An exception occured while trying to run
"C:\WINDOWS\System32\shell32.dll,Control_RunDLL powercfg.cpl"," when I try to
open the power configuration in control panel.

Similar message (desk.cpl or sysdm.cpl) when trying to open the System or
Desktop icon in the control panel.

In safe Mode the Display and Powerconfiguration icon open fine but the
System icon does not.

Question:
1. has anyone seen this issue and resolver it?
2. What does\does not load in Safe mode that may resolve some of the issues?
3. Any ideas on how to proceed?

Any ideas besides a reformat reload?

Thank you.

Reformatting is way to ahead . I believe the dll files needs to be
tuned up a little bit. Try running SFC scannow, .

1) start >> run >> sfc /scannow
2) it might ask for the windows xp cd , if it needs to change some
files.

let us know if that helps.

Vinod, I have an HP OEM Windows Xp media PC.
I ran the SFC Scannow utility and it has asked for the XP CD #2. All I have
are the "Recovery disks" given this is an OEM unit.

Do you know what files I need or how I can get disk #2 to restore lost or
broken files?

The message came back: Files that re required to run prperly must be copied
to the DLL Cache. Insert you XP Professional CD 2 now.

well in that case, the recovery cd's are not gonna be of much use. Do
you have a windows xp professional cd by any chance ? before that, do
you have serivce pack 2 installed on your computer ?

OEM machine does not come with MEDIA...How dumb is that. I will see if a
friend has a disk. It seems irresponsible of the Manufacturere and MS to not
include necessary disks or the means to repair these issues.

I do have SP2. But I will try a frineds XP CD.

Thank you for your support here in this forum.
