An error occurred during this operation

I now have a strange problem when trying to print to any
printer from my Win2k machine. I can print without
problem from Microsoft Word and Extra, but if I try to
print from IE6 I get "an error occurred during this
operation". If I right click on the printer and click on
properties nothing happens. There are no system or
application events logged. If I go to the printers
folder, highlite the printer, pull down file, and select
printing preferences I get "Printer operation cannot
continue due to lack of resources. Operation could not be
completed".

I deleted all of the printers as well as the drivers,
rebooted, and added my local printer. I was able to print
a test page during the install, but still had the original
problems. I can still print from ms word, but I can't
change the printer setup from word. And I still can't
print from IE6. I scanned knowledge base. Win.ini does
not have the read-only attribute and all of the folders
show up in start->settings. It looks like all of the
services required are started.

I can't pinpoint exactly when all this started happening.
It may have something to do with using VPN to connect to
work and adding two work printers to my home machine. I
was able to print to them from home. Since then I have
upgraded my processor (but not my mb), and at some point I
screwed up printing.

I really don't want to have to reinstall win2k from
scratch. I'm not sure what to check next - any help would
be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
