Without doubt: Miranda:

http://miranda-im.org/

Very lightweight, support for MSN/ICQ/IRC/Yahoo/Jabber/..., loads of
plugins to customize.

You can get the latest bleeding-edge test versions from here:

http://blog.miranda-im.org/

I have yet to encounter serious bugs in those test versions, and
most plugins don't work with the older, "stable" release anymore.

Wald

Yes, that is true, but the downside is: Without plugins you have only
simple texts and standard icons. You already need a plugin (AddSmily) to
enable smilies. Yahoo is neither part of the standard configuration and you
need to get a plugin for that too.

But, once one has found a nice set of icons and smilies, the program is
really cool. I like it.

Any others suggestions ??

I'm not satisfied with this very simple program Miranda.

Thanks anyway.

Personally, I think that Trillian is the best I've used despite the
bugs. However, since you asked..

Miranda: http://www.miranda-im.org/
Gaim: http://gaim.sf.net/
EasyMessage: http://www.easymessage.net/
Ayttm: http://ayttm.sf.net/

Of these, I liked Gaim the most, then Miranda, EasyMessage and Ayttm
bringing up the rear.

If you want a few I haven't tried...

Integrity Messenger, GEN2:

Paltalk: http://www.paltalk.com/PalTalkSite/
Instant-Messenger 2: http://www.messenger2.com/

Very good program ! The only thing is that i can not send files.

Lol... Miranda can. I suspect you've not been looking at the plugins to
extend Miranda's functionality.

True, without plugins Miranda is not that attractive. Just as Firefox would
be a lot less attractive without extensions.

It just takes some time to get a balanced setup that is just right for you.
Once at that point, it's a joy to use.

What about IM2?
http://www.im2.com/

Kindly regards.

Im2 looks promising. Quick question about it before I do an install.
Can you asign individual sound files to buddies. Trillian allows you
to asign an individual sound file to each buddy, so instead of a pop up
window, you can "hear" when they come on line.

You can find the Yahoo plugin over here:

http://www.miranda-im.org/download/details.php?action=viewfile&id=
1248

HOWEVER: this plugin should be included in the download, so you
probably won't need to install it separately.

For smileys: better install the whole TabSRMM plugin (for tabbed
chat windows), it includes the SmileyAdd plugin for smileys. Get
it at:

http://hell.at.eu.org/forums/

The most recent version can be downloaded at the top, right under
"News".

A tip: take some time to browse through their plugins section,
you're guaranteed to find some very handy stuff over there.

Good luck,
Wald
