I dunno how may of the acf Trillian users do MSN, but this just in:

NEWS Microsoft announced Wednesday that all subscribers to its MSN
Messenger service are required to update their software to a newer
version by October 15th. The company said that the forced upgrade is
necessitated by increasing security problems that would put users'
computers at risk.

While it declined to comment on the specific issues, Microsoft is
serious about the upgrade. Anyone running a Web-based Messenger earlier
than version 5, an XP-based Messenger earlier than version 4.7.2009, or
a Mac version earlier than 3.5 will be locked out of the service's
networks.

This also goes for Trillian, a third-party chat service that allows
users to run MSN, Yahoo!, AIM, IRC, and ICQ all from one interface.
According to Microsoft, Trillian's access to the MSN network will also
be dropped on October 15th if Cerulean Studios does not work out new
contractual agreements with Microsoft.

NEWS Microsoft announced Wednesday that all subscribers to its MSN

version by October 15th.

There's a bit more to it than that. This is what the Gaim developers say
about it: http://gaim.sourceforge.net/msn.php.

== QUOTE ==
A lot of people have been asking about whether MS's latest decisions
regarding MSN will affect us. Here's the general information on what
they're doing.

MS has decided that everyone should upgrade to MSN version 5.0 or higher.
MSN v5 is the first to use their MSN Protocol v8, which is the first to use
SSL for login. Now, we know how to login over this. This is not hard, and
we will be supporting MSNP9, the latest version of the protocol, soon.

However, upgrading to this does not guarantee us anything. Whereas
previously, Microsoft has let third party clients connect, they now require
a license for doing so. They still encourage clients to connect to their
network, so with any luck, we can work something out. If not, people may
find a way to connect anyway, but the legalities of this are pretty
obvious. Key words: "Intellectual Property" and "DMCA."

We cannot give a yes or a no to the question, "Will Gaim continue to work
after October 15th?" (Which, btw, is the day that third party clients not
using MSNP8 or higher will be unable to connect). We will do our best, but
if it comes down to it, we will drop MSN support. If you have a lot of
friends on MSN, perhaps it's the time to migrate them. Get them to install
Gaim ;) Then they can continue to talk to their MSN friends, but move to
Jabber or another protocol.

Many thanks for the update - I so rarely have any problems with
Trillian that I never think to check for news or updates.

Perhaps it might mean the end of Trillian as a freeware ap, if MS
makes 'em pay for a connectivity licence?

Yeah, I read that, too. I use Gaim, but not, of course, for MSN. The
group being Win oriented, I was posting info for that sector.

I'm very Win oriented, and I use Gaim, just because I hate advertising.
Any Jabber experience?

Nope. I'd be interested to know which is the best protocol, outside the big four.

The end has been a real possibility, I'd say, ever since Trillian went
to two concurrent releases - free and share. I guess that will depend,
as far as the MSN Wars go (remember the AOL Wars from early last year?)
on if they decide to play. Maybe they'll just drop MSN -- it's not the
only game in town. Or they might split MSN capability off to only being
present in the shareware (I assume it's usable in both, now, although I
haven't used Trillian in a year (or MSN ever)).

Trillian is currently FREEWARE. Trillian PRO is NOT!

And you're thinking that somehow contradicts what Steve said?

I didn't know there was a Gaim port *for* Windows.

I just read that Cerulian recently added it to the pay version of
Trillian.

For the record, here's a bit on how it works; it's XML-based. I presume
MSN is proprietary.
Nope. I'd be interested to know which is the best protocol, outside
the big four.

A cursory glance at Google didn't turn up any comparative reviews. I
did find a recent review of some cross-IM-protocol *clients*, so I'll
stick in the following link, for any penguinistas who may be reading the
thread:

Well, nagware freeware. Does anyone know how to turn off the nag
popup?

What nag popup??
I'm using V.74 - all I get is the little logo that shows the loading
process.

I'd agree with that. It might even be thought that ( pending a
successful licensing agreement ) it's a good excuse to drop the
freeware version altogether, and hope for a significant number of
'fans' to cough up for the new version.

Soon find out.

I'm also using 0.74. The nag window started popping up quite a
while after I started using Trillian, telling me how much I could
benefit by using the Pro version. It does not pop up often, though
it can happen multiple times duing a session. It may be keyed to
time spent connected, as I have a tendency to leave Trillian online
and go off to sleep or work, and I've racked up some ungodly number
of hours that way.

I've never seen it, despite the program being active for upwards of
six hours.

Might be something you've left ticked in the option settings - I seem
to recall that the closing window had such a message, try deselecting
the box marked 'show closing window'?

You mean six at a time, right? The nag screen tells me that it has
been running for well over 1000 hours, which means I should pay them
some money. It can pop up seconds after program start, or it can wait
until much later

Yep, six hours at a time.
Are you saying you've left it on for 1000 hours... or that it has
totted up the number of hours the program has been used since
installation? I'm guessing the latter.

A thousand hours straight? Steve, he's using Windows. ;)

Good bet. Now, about Saturday's lottery... :)

Well, nagware freeware. Does anyone know how to turn off the nag
popup?

If you search under nag on the trillian board, you will find a thread or two
regarding the nag screen. There is a discussion about the trillian.ini file
and how to deal with the nag.
