"Always dial my default connection"

In IE6\ Tools\ Internet Options\ Connections, there are 3 options, namely:

Never dial a connection.
Dial whenever a network connection is not present.
Always dial my default connection.

I find the second and third option works the same way for me, that is,
whenever I click on Internet Explorer it will dial and connect
automatically.

Is there a difference between the second and third option that I do not
realise?

If you had a LAN connection and IE was aware of it
the second option would (maybe) inhibit dialing.

The first and the last are the most reliable since they don't depend
on IE being able to make a correct determination of the state of the
other link.
