How can you pay with a credit card ? I only got a bank transfer
option.

You may not have been at the right URL for converting your previously
existing free account to a subscription account.

My experience of that with CC was flawless and took about 2-3 minutes.

Wabble. The second "them" refers to my ISP.

i didnt think of my ISP

i just realized that here in the UK

BT have a news servers thats pretty damn quick

news.btopenworld.com

im on bt broadband i dont need to log on to that server so i dunno if its
anything to do with them knowing i use their broadband service (dont have to
log on for that either)

so i just typed into the server as news.btopenworld.com and didnt put a
password in and just put in the usual muddled up e mail address and wehay

give it a try if you like... they are missing a few groups, i can use
x-privat for those groups though, it hasnt been that slow for me (on a 2Mbps
connection mind) it still isnt as fast as N.I.N but hey, i cant complain
it's free!!

My next choice would be the limited free service at TERANEWS. You pay a
one-time charge of $4, but you not only get free service forever thereafter,
you also get binary service, which I think is relatively rare in the "free"
arena.

I have free and a pay Teranews accounts and I'm using neither at the
moment. All was fine until a month or so ago and then I started
missing articles. Comparing with other servers, it looks like TN is
missing 25-30% or articles. Hence, I'm using readfreenews at the
moment.

I've addressed this before, and I'd like to know why you wouldn't just go
with the totally-free, password-free, username-free, everything-free
service
at Usnetserver. Here's the server name:

<free-text.usenetserver.com>

They're fast, reliable, and run by a for-pay server company. But there's
no
charge for their text service.

BECAUSE YOU CANT POST!

Get out! Well, that's my second or third bad suggestion in a couple of
days, so I'll STFU for now, I guess. This is basically how it is in the
low-end of the market.

I once tried pricing my product extremely low and it caused me problems
(like keeping the lights turned on!), so this is the invariable dilemma with
"free" or very-bargain-priced things in general.

But such (seemingly) basic rules were often (seemingly) violated on the
internet, where such truly-useful stuff as e-mail is still as free as can
be. They're even competing...on free!

Another reason my suggestions have lately been, ahh, suboptimal, is that I
do use two pay servers myself on a daily basis, so I'm not up-to-date
anymore on how the bargain services are doing, such as this surprising
glitch you now mention at Teranews. As you note, they have been a real
bargain + reliable for a long time.

Oh well, just FTR, I've switched from Giganews, which was simply great, to
Agent Premium, which is much cheaper and, so far, almost as great. Then, I
also use Easynews because of their incomparable web tools. Total of $25
monthly for an unparalleled package with unlimited downloading (including
binaries, 'natch.)

Maybe this time I'll help *somebody!*

Individual.net/CIS have been a great free service for many years so I
didn't mind paying the 10 euros :)

readfreenews.net is going really well. It's not that I'm stingy, I'd just
rather spend it on other things. Like beer for example.
