Almost let "Call of Duty" get away!

Apologies for being semi-OT in the ghost-recon NG, but didn't see any NG's
that cover conflicted-based shooters in general.

I just picked up "Call of Duty" earlier tonight and have been completetly
blown away with it! For the longest time, I have been wanting to see a WW2
shooter that was as intense as "Call of Duty". I never knew what exactly
was missing, but "Call of Duty" certaintly filled what I have long been
seeking with a WW2 shooter.

I had almost just written it off as "just another WW2 shooter", but decided
to give it a try -- if for any reason only because I have always had an
interest in the European WW2 theater. Also, having served as an 11B1P
(airborne infantry) in the 82nd Airborne myself (2/504th PIR, '92 to '96) a
shooter that encaspulated the American airborne in WW2 was quite appealing.
:^)

"Call of Duty" isn't as challenging and long as many of the other shooters
under the same catagory, but it is incredibly fun! I prefer simplicity over
complex squad control anyhow, mainly because hardly any other squad-based
shooter has been able to do it right -- either the squad control is far too
complex or the AI leaves too much to be desired. The cinematic effects in
"Call of Duty" are incredible and keep the adrenaline flowing. The
animation is superb. Most importantly, however, is the individual human
characteristics put into the soldiers. In the past, too many military-based
games have been black and white when it comes to portraying characterstics
of soldiers. In "Call of Duty", the soldiers are highly motivated,
objective-oriented, and resourceful -- yet maintain aspects of
individuality. In short, they are paratroopers. The animation dialogues had
me laughing constantly. Very well done! :^)

I also love how every "stereotypical" European WW2 situation found itself
into the game. The developers, no doubt, spent many hours watching old WW2
movies, reading Stephen Ambrose's books, and watching "Band of Brothers" a
countless number of times. Its simplistic, to be sure, but put together
very well.

I hope to see more games like "Call of Duty" in the future. Kudos to the
developers for bringing together this awesome game!

I just got down playing Max Payne, Splinter Cell, and Ghost Recon
now I think I'll get one of those WWII games. So call of duty is
great, hah? Gogamer.com has it for $34 but I'll look around for
the best price. I just hope my system is fast enough.
