all USB devices fail after installing SP1 for XP Professional

I recently purchased some hardware that requires SP1 to
operate. But having installed SP1 for XP Professional I
have found that my USB devices no longer work. I have
tried re-installing the drivers that came with my
motherboard, but this has had no effect. I can remedy the
problem by removing the service pack, but this leaves my
new hardware useless. Any suggestions?
