All file associations lost

I have a client's laptop here - he was attempting an install of Norton
antivirus 2006 and had problems - now all file associations are lost and it
is not possible to start any programs. When I first examined the file
association table there were only 2 items in it - now there are more - but I
am unable to import any of the registry fixes from Doug Knox' site since it
doesn't recognize the .reg extension. The options to add and delete
associations are grayed out. Any suggestions for the next step would be
appreciated.

Back up his data - with Knoppix if necessary or by slaving the laptop
drive in an enclosure to a working XP box.

Do a System Restore. If this is not possible, do a Repair Install. If
that doesn't work, flatten the system. Install drivers, programs,
restore data from backup.
