Lost nearly all file associations

This morning I installed the 2006 Norton Internet Security software and
once installation was complete, most of my file associations were lost.
With the exception of Internet Explorer, I can't really open anything.

I've looked through the topics here and seen several links to download
registry fix files *.reg where people say you are meant to download and
"double click" or open and select yes to import - but I can't open
anything, so that won't work. Double clicking creates a shortcut on my
desktop, and when I right click there is no choice for "Open". If
there is, then nothing happens. I found one method that actually
allows me to open my registry, but I'm not really able to change much
in it without an error message.

To any of those who were having the same problem in the past couple
months - did you ever find a solution? Microsoft told me that I'd have
to format my laptop to fix the problem.

Hi,

Uninstall the (ugh) Norton software, then run System Restore to a time prior
to the installation.
