After install XP continuously stops responding

I just installed XP on my laptop. I reformatted the drive
and partitioned it to NTFS, because that is what was on it
before. When I am using windows, it will just stop
responding and hang up. Then it takes several trys to get
my laptop to turn back on after I hit the power button.
Can anyone help me. I dont know where else to go.
 
did you boot from the cd and then format ntfs, if full format doesnt work,
do a quick format, had to do that with a old 300 mhz pc
