Kevin

I purchased a used laptop, don't have admin password.
need to reset or change to access admin. How?

Kevin;
Try leaving the password blank.

The password is Case Sensitive.
Check Caps Lock and try various of Capital combinations.

If you do not have a Password Recovery Disk, it is to late to make it.
Or
Log in to any account that has Administrator access.
Then go to User Accounts in Control Panel.
Select the user and change the password.

Windows XP Pro:
At the log-in screen, press Ctrl/Alt/Del twice quickly
Type "Administrator" and leave password blank.

Windows XP Home:
Reboot, tapping F8 each second.
Select Safe Mode at the menu.
Select Administrator, leave password blank.

Then go to User Accounts in Control Panel.
Select the user and change the password.
If you are using Windows XP Pro and have encrypted data, you may
permanently lose access to the encrypted data.

Here is another option:

Another option is to install Windows XP on another partition and take
Ownership of your data.
You could also perform another installation on the same partition,
although this is not a permanent fix and it is recommended to perform
a Clean Installation after retrieving your data.

After this is resolved, take precautions to not lose the password.

Kevin,

Presumably you can login as YOURSELF!

I also presume that you are a member of the Admin Group! (If not put a hold
on the check until you get the password from the seller).

If those conditions are met:
Login as yourself
Right-Click "My Computer", and Click on "Manage"
In the LEFT pane of the Computer Management Window,
Click on "Local Users and Groups", then on "Users"
In the RIGHT pane Right-Click on "Administrator", select "Set Password..."
You will receive a warning, which you must READ CAREFULLY!
If you decide to proceed, you can set a new password,
without having to know the current password!

I have done this twice (on separate PCs) without problems - Caveat Emptor!

Final Word - If you yourself have Admin rights, DO YOU REALLY NEED TO DO
IT??

Greetings --

Ask the person from whom you purchased the laptop. If he doesn't
know it, there's a chance the laptop was stolen.
