Adding slide numbers

I work with PowerPoint all the time, but someone has sent me a PP
presentation that will not allow me to add slide numbers to the slides. Can
anyone help me figure out why?

Also, when I go to print my handouts, it won't let me just print out the
black and white. The presentation has a dark background and it just prints
the slide so dark with the background that you cannot read the text. Any
suggestions?

Is the presentation protected in some way?

How are you trying to apply the slide numbers? Have you checked that the
number area on the slide master has not been deleted.

Do you get any message when you open the pres? A password protected pres
will give an open as read only message (as long as you have XP / 2003)

If you go to View > color / greyscale>Pure B&W you will get an idea of how
it will print and also some options for changing the settings

1. Chances are the Slide Number (Number Area) placeholder was removed from
the Slide Master. Click "View", "Master", "Slide Master". Right-click an
empty area of your slide and click "Master Layout". Do you have the ability
to click the "Number Area" checkbox? If so, click it. If not, you will
need to base this presentation on some other design template (unless you
have it as well). Close the Master View, click "Format", "Slide Design" and
select a different design.

2. As far as printing, try the "Pure Black and White" option under the
"Color/Grayscale" dropdown option at the bottom left of the Print Dialog
box.

It's hard to say w/o more info. What does PowerPoint do when you try?
Nothing? Display error messages? Slap you upside the head? (I sure wish I
could teach my copy to do that to me when I'm about to do something I'll regret
later).

Again, what happens when you try to change the print settings (in the File,
Print dialog box)?

Is the background a "real" background, which has been inserted with Format -
Background? Or is it a picture inserted in the master as the bottom layer?
To test, go to View - Master - Slide master, click on the "background" and
try to move it. If it can be moved, it is a picture and will be printed, if
it can't be moved, it is a background fill.

With View - Color/Grayscale you should be able to alter the settings, how
backgrounds or pictures are printed on b/w printers. Usually grayscale
setting in the Print dialog gives better results than pure b/w.
