adding 2000 DC to 2003 AD

We are planning to update to the AD from nt but will have 3 2003 servers to
start with and then would like to promote some 2000 members to DC and add
some new DCs as 2000 latter. I have read that if you have native 2003 AD you
can not add new additional 2000 DCs. is this true? if it is, how do I make
the 2003 servers to run in mixed mode? I will be starting the forest and
root domain with the 2003 server.
