Adding 2003 DC

We have a 2003 forest with a couple 2000 DCs. I would like to make a 2003
server currently in a 2000 domain into a DC. My question is can I have a
2000 and a 2003 DC in the same domain? I know there is no such thing as a
backup DC now but I would like the 2003 server to act like a backup in case
something happens to the 2000 DC.

Thanks

This is a good idea to have a second dc in your domain. You can have a 2003
dc with a 2000 dc but you will have to prep the domain and forest. When
you have completed you should probably transfer the fsmo roles to the new
dc.

You need to be aware of Exchange issues if you have that in your forest as
well. Do you have an Exchange system? If so what version?

The Forest is already 2003 so I believe all the 2000 Domains were preped so
that it they worked properly in the 2003 forest. We have an exchange 2003
server and our 2003 DNS server (top of forest) and the 2000 DC in the
current domain was prepped for exchange 2003. I assume there should be a way
to double check to make sure the current 2000 DC is 2003 prepped? This would
have been done months ago when we moved the forest to 2003. Assuming that it
is prepped then adding a 2003 DC should not be a problem correct?

You prep the domain and forest, you don't prep a DC. But each domain has to
be prep'd, so if you have multiple domains make sure each has been prep'd.
Once a domain and forest have been prep'd it is just a simple dcpromo.
