Windows 2000 Domain with Windows 2003 DC's??

We currently run a Windows 2000 AD domain. We finally got approval to put
DC's at each of our remote sites and join the remote clients to the domain.
The new servers all have Windows 2003 server on them. Can we DCPromo a
Windows 2003 server and make it a DC in a Windows 2000 domain?

Thanks,

Denny

Yes, but you must follow the (documented) procedure for first
"prepping" the Forest, then the Domain:

adprep /forestprep (against the Schema Master)
adprep /domainprep (against the Infrastructure Master)

You must also have FULL replication, which includes removing
any abandoned (but never properly demoted) DC accounts (or
abandoned domains.)

Use "NTDSUtil metadata cleanup" for doing such cleanup if needed.

I generally find most who are new to Win2003, can best upgrade an
existing DC first rather than try to add one, but both processes work
just fine -- the upgrade automates much of the work when you just
insert the CDROM and it autostarts.

Hello,

Thank you for the replies. If I were to upgrade the existing DC's from W2K
Servers to W2K3, do I need to do any prep work to the other two W2K DC's
while I'm upgrading the first one or is it done automatically?

TIA,

Denny

No, there is no separate prep work -- you still must do the:
....one time only PER FOREST

....one time only PER DOMAIN (before the first 2003 DC in THAT domain)
