Domain upgrade from 2000 to 2003

H

HelpPls

Hello all -

I would appreciate any help you can give me...

We would like to migrate our domain from a Windows 2000 to a Windows 2003
environment. Since we currently have only (1) Windows 2000 Domain
Controller, we don't believe it will be too difficult and this will be a
good time to add a second DC.

This is our plan:

On our current 2000 DC, we will run the Forest and Domain ADPrep required
for the 2003 environment. Since we have a single Exchange 2000 server, we
will also run the Inetorgpersonprevent.ldf. Once we perform these 2 steps,
we will DCPROMO a new 2003 server and make it the second DC in the
environment. We will then transfer all FSMO roles to the new 2003 DC and
install DNS on it as well. We will then DCPROMO the 2000 DC to be a member
server, reinstall a fresh copy of 2003 and DCPROMO it back as the 2nd 2003
DC.

Does this make sense? Am I over looking anything?

***At what point will my clients, when pinging MYDOMAIN.LOCAL, resolve to
the new 2003 DC server instead of the 2000DC????

Thanks,

Sean

Sean-

I only see one thaing that you;re overlooking - marking the new DC as a
global catalog. You can do this by opening the NDTDS settings object in AD
Sites & services for the new box. You'll need to wait for the event in the
new box indicating htat it is now a GC before removing the original server.
You'll also need to install DNS on the new server - the dcpromo wizard can
take care of this

Your clients will start talking to the new DC as soon as they have their DNS
settings updated to point to it (DHCP change here). You'll wnat to wait at
least a full DHCP lease lifetime before you take the old DNS/DC out.
