add remove programs just died

Following an attempt to install the windows scripting host
scripten.exe (recommended by symantec to fix a problem of a
blank status screen in the firewall apllication, which didn't
work btw), my add/remove programs applet no longer displays
anything but a blank window with a gray bar along the left, and
the menu phrases run into a long line at the top of the window
under the bar. Any ideas how to fix this?

There is an MS kb article with regard corrupt add/remove, sorry but no
longer have #
